Weekly Wrap: Week 2

Last week, we witnessed the excitement that can come with a young team. This week, we saw the growing pains that often accompany it. The Philadelphia Eagles did not impress in their home opener against the San Francisco 49ers. A game riddled with penalties, mistakes, and injuries saw the Eagles fall to the Niners 17-11.

Most notable would have to be the injuries. With Brandon Graham’s suffering a season ending Achilles injury, and Brandon Brooks scheduled to undergo an MRI for a torn pectoral. This game will have season long implications.

The defense played pretty well, holding the Niners to a modest 17 points, but with zero turnovers, the Eagles continue a multi-year struggle in the takeaway category.

On the other side of the ball, the offense was simply not good enough, and it started with the play calling. This game will be a learning lesson for rookie HC Nick Sirianni as well.

There is plenty of blame to go around, but when you leave so many points off the board, it’s going to be hard to win against anyone. Like when Jalen Hurts connected with Quez Watkins for a 91 yard gain. A play that would end up leading to zero points after a failed fourth down attempt.

As much as there is blame to share, there is also a lot to learn from this game. Call it a reality check, a kick in the pants or whatever you want. At the end of the day, it’s how this team reacts that will define who they are.

We will get a glimpse of the team they want to be in 2021 when they take on the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night football.
