Throwback Thursday: Frankford Yellow Jackets
The Philadelphia Eagles weren’t always known for their midnight green uniforms. And before the classic Kelly green, the football team from the city of brotherly love was donning much different colors.
Before the Philadelphia Eagles were founded in 1933 as an expansion team, purchased by Bert Bell and Head Coach Lud Wray for a mere $2,500, they were known as the Frankford Yellow Jackets.
From 1924 to 1931, the Yellow Jackets wore the yellow and powder blue on their way to a 70-45-15 record. They even won the NFL Championship in 1926. However, this was not enough to overcome the financial hardships of the Great Depression. A devastating fire which took out their home field, Frankford Stadium, in 1931 would just about be the end of the franchise.
Since their inception, the Philadelphia Eagles have worn dozens of uniform combinations. We are still lucky enough to see them pay homage to the historic Yellow Jackets by sporting the throwback jerseys occasionally.
The 88 year old franchise offers a rich football history, and the uniforms just begin to scratch the surface. We look forward to learning more about this incredible team as the season goes on.
