Throwback Thursday

The Philadelphia Eagles will take on the Carolina Panthers this Sunday October 10th. The date 10/10 has some significance for the Eagles, as it marks what many consider the greatest Eagles home opener of all time.

The Eagles were 0-1-1 when they finally held their home opener on October 10, 1948 in Shibe Park against division rival New York Giants. The birds would come out flying, taking a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. The Eagles would never land as they glided to a 45-0 victory.

Tommy Thompson would throw two TDs and rush another to lead the Eagles to their largest margin of victory ever against the G-men. It would also tie for the Eagles largest margin of victory against any team, in the clubs history.

When was the other 45 point victory you may wonder. Well, it just so happened to be the very next week, when the Eagles defeated Washington with an identical final score of 45-0. These victories demonstrate just exactly why the 1948 team is considered to be one of the best in the franchise’s history.

Philadelphia did not lose a single game for the remainder of the year, and soared to their first NFL Championship.
