Deshaun Watson Rumors

With the trade deadline quickly approaching and rumors swirling, I thought I’d get my skin in the game. In the off-season, there were reports, never really certified, that the Eagles had made an official offer to the Houston Texans in exchange for Deshaun Watson. Supposedly the deal didn’t get done because Watson was unwilling to waive his no-trade clause. In other words, he didn’t want to come to Philly.

Whenever Jalen Hurts has a bad performance, the rumors are quickly stirred up again. Recently, there were reports of some saying that owner Jeffrey Lurie has “green lighted” any potential moves to acquire the star QB. There is also a lot of debate as to whether or not this would be a good move for the Eagles.

My thoughts: don’t do it. I am unsure where the asking price has landed but the Eagles are in position to have not only 3 first round picks next season, but they are currently sitting with 3 Top 10 picks in the 2022 draft. Yes, Howie Roseman has proven to be unreliable in the draft and I’m not opposed to using that capital to improve this team, but there are other places I would look towards before the QB position.

I highlighted early on in the season how young this team is, especially at the skill position. We have a rookie head coach and nearly rookie QB. This team is in a rebuild mode just 4 seasons after winning Super Bowl LII. Acquiring Deshaun Watson will not turn this into a championship team. As good as he is on the field, I think bringing him to Philadelphia will simply cause distractions without producing significantly more wins.

I say we ride this season out with Hurts and give him a chance to prove himself. If he fails to do so, then we select either select a QB with one of our first round picks, or trade for one. A prime candidate could be Russell Wilson.

What do you make of all the Watson rumors? Do you want the Eagles to trade for him?
